Kanthal

Kanthal (Fe-cr-al) - an alloy consisting of iron, chromium and aluminum with high resistance. Also contains manganese and silicon (sometime nickel).

Ukrainian analog of Kanthal - Fechral.

Kanthal is the cheapest heat-resistant alloy, because it doesn't contain nickel and less technologically advanced in the manufacture of wire and strip.

Kanthal wire supplied in diameter 0,2-6 mm.

Kanthal stable at high temperatures in environments containing sulfur compounds, where Nichrome unstable. Kanthal wire difficult drawing. Nichrome more flexible, but the cost is more expensive because of the presence of nickel.

Kanthal supplied in the large diameter wire and tape for the resistance of medium and high power.

Kanthal much cheaper then Nichrome as chromium and aluminum are relatively cheap and available. However, it is less technological, more rigid and fragile, of which may be obtained the wire and strip with large size. Thus, these alloys are mainly used in electric heating devices for industrial furnaces.

Kanthal has high ohmic resistance, which allows us to recommend it as a resistance element in the heater.

Physical and mechanical properties

At high temperatures Kanthal has low creep resistance at temperatures above 1100-1200 ˚C, which leads to sagging heaters under its own weight. Therefore, in order to prevent substantial sagging heaters should be placed on poles throughout. Grade 0Cr23Al5 at room temperature, and especially 0Cr27Al7Mo2 have low ductility. The strip thickness of 2 mm and a wire diameter of 5 mm is recommended to produce the heaters, after heating the alloy to 200 - 350 ˚C.

Application

Kanthal used for the same purposes as the Nichrome.

Kanthal widely used in resistors, rheostats, home appliances, low-temperature resistance furnaces, heaters and components, etc.
