Alumel

Alumel - heat-resistant aluminum-nickel alloy with silicon, manganese and cobalt. Manufactured as wire for thermocouples.

Alumel used in pyrometry as a negative thermoelectrode of chromel-alumel thermocouple, also used as compensating wire. Alumel thermocouples used for temperature measurements up to 1000 °C. Also developed and used Alumel doped zirconium 0,06-0,1% which increases the plasticity (at 600-1100 °C) and long-term strength (at 700-900 °C), and also increases the stability of the thermoelectric power at temperatures up to 1250-1300 °C.

Physical properties of the alloy, delivered in the form of wire:

  • electrical resistivity - 0,33 ± 0,05 ohm mm2 / m;
  • linear coefficient of thermal expansion - 16 ... 18.10 -6 ° C-1;
  • density - 8670 kg/m3;
  • temperature coefficient of electrical resistance - 13,3 · 10-4 ° C-1.

Mechanical and technological properties

  • tensile strength σv - 440 MPa;
  • elongation δ - 20 ... 25%;
  • Brinell hardness, HB - 130 kgf/mm2 (soft state) 250 ... 300 kgf/mm2 (solid);

Temperature:

  • fusion - 1430 ... 1450 °C;
  • Forging - 1180 ... 1220 °C;
  • annealing - 900 ... 1000 °C;
  • operation - up to 1000 °C.

Application

Alumel is widely used in the manufacture of pyrometry compensating cable, as well as in the production of negative thermoelectrodes thermocouples. Alumel wire supplied with a diameter of 0.2 to 5.0 mm.

Alumel thermocouples used chromel-alumel as a negative electrode for remote temperature measurement in the range up to 1000 °C.

Advantages

Thanks to a significant nickel content in the alloy, benefits of alumel mainly determined by the physical properties of the metal. This is, heat and corrosion resistant material, especially in hostile environments. Improving these qualities is achieved by adding alloying elements. Alumel alloying increases the plasticity index at 600-1100 °C provides long-term strength at 700-900 °C, and also allows the use of alumel at temperatures up to 1200 °C.

Disadvantages

Alumel susceptible to the corrosive effects of sulfur at elevated temperatures, leading to corrosion. This disadvantage is compensated by the increase in the alloy of silicon and aluminum content.

The high cost of the alloy due to the high cost of nickel.
